Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Week 3 of the Jeopardy season begins tonight with 2-day champion Jen Feldman taking on Seattle puzzle designer David Erb and Los Angeles writer Dana Schwartz. Not only is this a new week on the show, this was also the beginning of a fresh taping week—which quite possibly means that none of our players knew of Jen’s propensity to not make cover bets in Final Jeopardy. This actually might work to Jen’s advantage if she’s in the right situation today.

I do want to quickly comment on the fact that no editorial was published this weekend; I expect that one will be released midweek to make up for it.

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

A few days after his death in May 1864, a number of American luminaries were in Concord, Massachusetts to mourn the passing of Nathaniel Hawthorne, writer of works such as The Scarlet Letter and The House of the Seven Gables. Those luminaries also included Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Oliver Wendell Holmes. Interestingly, Emerson wrote words of regret in his diary following the service; he was regretful that he was not closer friends with his fellow American writer.

To me, the inclusion of former President Pierce in the clue is the important name here; Pierce and Hawthorne were close friends from Bowdoin College in Maine and remained close friends for over four decades. (Certainly, the friendship of the two has been mentioned previously on this site, back in early pandemic times.)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • I would like to say two things: firstly, Ken’s opening statement is written by the producers, generally Sarah. What I am about say is 100% not Ken’s fault. Secondly, I think that the statement made at the start of the show saying that Jen made an “unorthodox wager” on Friday was completely out-of-pocket and inappropriate for the show to make at the start of a new week of shows, as it actually takes away one of the major advantages of having not made a cover wager on Friday—tipping off this week’s players, saying that an unorthodox wager was made, effectively removes the ability for a player to successfully do it again in the new week. Thankfully, David very much made this a moot point.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: David $30,000 Jen $8,800 Dana $6,400)

Jen: Standard cover bet over Dana is $4,001. (Actual bet: $4,001)

David: Bet no more than $12,399 and enjoy your win. (Actual bet: $12,345)

Dana: In the battle for second, you have two choices here: either less than $1,600 if you think Jen will cover, or all in if you think she won’t. (Actual bet: $5,000)
