Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

The final game of our opening week of Season 41 features defending champion Mark Palmere taking on West Virginia’s Hilary Glazer and Ohio’s Evan Suttell.

It was brought to my attention earlier in the week that Evan does have some collegiate quiz bowl experience, having played some time for Michigan State. That said, as I always say in these situations: quiz bowl is not Jeopardy and while quiz bowl experience is always nice, it is no guarantee of success—the show’s history is littered with one-and-done quiz bowlers.

Richard Starkey—best known worldwide as Ringo Starr, the drummer for The Beatles—was a sickly child; he had already recovered from peritonitis at the age of six when he contracted tuberculosis at the age of 13. While recovering at the sanatorium, he learned drums in a band at the hospital, basically created by the hospital to relieve their patients of boredom. From that point forward, Starr only wanted to be a drummer, and joined local Liverpool skiffle bands once he had recovered. Starr replaced Pete Best as the Beatles’ drummer in August 1962 and the rest is history.

I suspect that this clue will be very straightforward for most of the home viewers, but younger contestants and viewers might struggle more with this.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Seriously. As I’ve said in the past—many numbers have taken on alternative meanings that you might not want to be associated with. And while I personally have no issue with the number 304—all work is important—I think Hilary might want to have a do-over with her Final Jeopardy wager.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Evan $17,200 Mark $13,800 Hilary $800)

Mark: You’re within four-fifths of Evan’s score; your minimum bet should thus be $6,801. Your maximum bet should be $6,999. (Actual bet: $4,567)

Evan: Standard cover bet over Mark is $10,401. (Actual bet: $3,000)

Hilary: You can’t win tonight unless Mark and Evan both overbet significantly. (Actual bet: $304)
