Why is it called rotten tomatoes? ›

Rotten Tomatoes is a website dedicated to reviews, information, and news of movies and television series. The name derives from the vaudeville-era cliché of throwing tomatoes and other products at stage performers if a performance was particularly bad. The company has been owned by Flixster, a Warner Bros.

In February 2016, Rotten Tomatoes and its parent site Flixster were sold to Comcast's Fandango Media. Warner Bros retained a minority stake in the merged entities, including Fandango.

If 60% of reviews are positive, the movie is given a “Fresh” status, but if positive reviews fall below that benchmark, it is deemed “Rotten.” A popular piece of media will typically fall between the 70-90% range, but rarely, a project will receive a 100% score. This means every last review from critics was positive.

As the reviews of a given film accumulate, the Rotten Tomatoes score measures the percentage that are more positive than negative, and assigns an overall fresh or rotten rating to the movie. Scores of over 60 percent are considered fresh, and scores of 59 percent and under are rotten.

To date, Leave No Trace holds the site's record, with a rating of 100% and 252 positive reviews.

The average Rotten Tomatoes user will see a 97 percent score as nearly a masterpiece. “It has to be good,” they might say, or commercials will tell them, “It's the best-reviewed movie of the year!”

Fully rotten produce will be slimy to the touch, heavily wrinkled, paler than its ripe color (yellow if previously green), sometimes moldy, and often accompanied by a foul smell, says Ahern. If you spot any of these common signs, your food is no longer safe (or tasty) to eat.

Rotten Tomatoes is now owned by Fandango Media, and it uses Fandango's movie ticket purchase system so that users can purchase movie tickets directly from its site. So, some of Rotten Tomatoes revenues also come from a fee it collects for each online ticket purchase.

How trustworthy is Rotten Tomatoes? A new report from New York Magazine suggests that Rotten Tomatoes scores can be easily manipulated, alleging specifically that a public relations firm, Bunker 15, has paid low-level, often self-published reviewers for positive write-ups as a way to game scores.

The scoring system of Rotten Tomatoes is heavily biased due to genre bias, selection bias, time bias, and recency bias. The reviews lack parity and context, making them untrustworthy. Rotten Tomatoes' audience scoring system was completely broken in 2010, with a flood of reviews drastically changing scores.
