This article explains how to delete your Facebook account on an iPhone. It also describes the key differences between deleting and deactivating so that you can decide whether to use it again later or switch to a Facebook alternative.
How to Delete Facebook on iPhone
While deleting the app will remove Facebook from your Home Screen, it doesn't actually close your account. Whether you use the app or a web browser, you can follow these steps to permanently delete your Facebook account.
Consider what you'll lose when you erase your Facebook account. You can save a copy of your Facebook data to preserve messages, saved items, posts, and more. See the section below these directions for something else you should look into before you complete these steps.
Open the Facebook app and tap Menu in the lower-right corner. If you're in a web browser, tap the three lines at the top right.
Select Settings & privacy > Settings.
Tap Accounts Center.
Tap Personal details.
Tap Account ownership and control.
Tap Deactivation or deletion.
Select your Facebook account if you see that option.
Choose Delete account and then tap Continue.
Deleting your Facebook account is not the same as deactivating it. See the bottom of this page for important information about how their differences matter.
Follow the rest of the on-screen steps by selecting Continue a few times.
Enter your password when asked, and then tap Delete account.
Reset Accounts That Use Your Facebook Login
If you use Facebook to sign in to other websites and apps, it's important to prepare those accounts before you delete Facebook so that you don't lose access to them. If you don't do this, you might need to contact those apps and services to recover your account after deleting Facebook.
Here's how to see which apps use your Facebook login information:
Open Facebook and tap Menu at the bottom of the app, or tap the three lines at the top of the mobile website.
Go to Settings & privacy > Settings.
Swipe down to the Your activity section and choose Apps and websites. Log in to your Facebook account if asked.
Listed here are all the apps and websites you've connected to your Facebook account.
Either log in to each site or app that you want to keep and see if you can disconnect it from Facebook (so that it uses your email address instead), or contact the company to ask about your options.
If you want to keep any of these accounts after deleting Facebook, it's crucial that you review them now.
Select one of the apps or websites from the list and then tap Remove > Remove.
Or, to delete all your Facebook logins, scroll down to Apps, websites and games and tap Turn off > Turn off.
Deleting vs Deactivating Facebook
You have two options for closing your Facebook account: deactivate it or delete it completely. Here's how they differ:
- Deactivate Facebook if you want to take a break. Nearly everything on your account (like posts and photos) will be inaccessible to other users. Deactivating Facebook is handy because you can reactivate your account to get all this information back. Plus, this method lets you use Messenger without Facebook.
- Delete Facebook to permanently close your account and erase all the content. This includes your posts, Messenger conversations, photos, etc. This is permanent, so Facebook gives you 30 days to change your mind; after that, you'll need to make a new account to use Facebook again.
